OPEN THREAD 20200315

Basically, all legal free speech is allowed. We will assist the authorities in dealing with illegal speech. You are each other’s moderators. Have fun. And don’t forget to MAGA at nuclear levels.

After going through the elements, we now enjoy a sequence of RANDOM somewhat pseudo-random topics that will be thrown out for investigation and commentary on each open thread. At some point, in a way something like composite numbers, I will accidentally hit a second occurrence of one of them – that’s just normal.

Have fun!

Day 130 – Ida B. Wells

  1. Ida B. Wells was born a slave in 1862. She died in Chicago in 1931. Her lifespan spanned some tumultuous times, and she had quite the tumultuous life. She was an early activist for a number of righteous causes and contributed greatly to their early successes….even though many organizations doubled-down and went “fringier” once the causes were substantially accomplished and the causes may have mutated into malignancy.

She was an early advocate of civil rights for blacks and a founder of the NAACP. Having been born a slave and never seeing desegregation, that was certainly righteous. The NAACP of today is just another left-wing political group posturing about exaggerated feelz. She was for women’s suffrage and attained partial victory in the state of Illinois — in 1913, women could newly vote for presidential electors, mayors, aldermen, and the like…..but not for Governor or Congressmen. She was a feminist when it was rare — and managed newspapers. She was a huge voice against lynching at a time when people actually were dragged out of government custody and murdered by mobs — and had her newspaper’s facilities burned to the ground for saying something about it…..and now we have Jussie Smollett.

She knew and was admired by Frederick Douglass in her youth — but got to watch communist schmucks like W. E. B. Du Bois migrate into leadership roles carrying forward her legacy. She was a heroic figure and shining light……but, alas, she moved to Chicago.

  2. I used to grab a sandwich from a local Quiznos for dinner. The franchise owner was Thad Haileselassie (nice guy — Quizno’s drove him out of business by opening two other franchises closer to his clientele). Anyway, we used to talk while he was making things. He was from Ethiopia and was so happy to be here in America. In 2008, he was overjoyed that there was a black candidate for President. He was starry-eyed — maybe his son could be President!

And I said, “it’s great that a black man can run for the highest office in this country,” and said I might well vote for Thad’s son when that day comes, “but it is a very bad thing that this guy comes from Chicago, because he could well ruin it for future candidates.”

  3. Teacher: Class please welcome Hillary Clinton today. She will answer your questions.

Hillary: Hello class. Who has the first question?

    *Johnny raises hand*

Johnny: My name is Johnny. I have 3 questions.

    – Why did you lie about Benghazi?
    – What was in those emails you deleted?
    – And does your pattern of corruption mean we can never trust you?

*The recess bell rings and the children return 40 minutes later.*

Hillary: Ok. Where were we? Who has a question?

    *Kid raises hand*

George: My name is George and I have 5 questions.

    – Why did you lie about Benghazi?
    – What was in those emails you deleted?
    – Does your pattern of corruption mean we can never trust you?
    – Why did the bell ring 10 minutes early?
    – And… uh… oh yeah. Where’s Johnny?

  4. **congressman**: Mr speaker, half of the people in this house are supporting corruption and are stupid.

**speaker**: Honorable member, please withdraw that statement.

**congressman**: I withdraw that statement. Half of members in this house are not stupid.

    **speaker**: Thank you. Let’s continue…

    1. I withdraw that statement. Half of members in this house are not stupid.

Clearly the speaker must be one of the stupid half, as the retraction simply makes the same claim as it supposedly retracted. Half of the house is not stupid…and the other half is.

But of course, it was really a joke about corruption…

  5. In other news, the Washington Redskins finally decided to drop their offensive name.

Dan Snyder, owner of the NFL Redskins, has announced that the team is dropping “Washington” from the team name, and it will henceforth be simply known as, “The Redskins.” It was reported that he finds the word “Washington” imparts a negative image of poor leadership, mismanagement, corruption, cheating, lying, and graft, and is not a fitting role-model for young fans of football.
