  4. Carbon?

    Wonderful stuff. It comes in at least three very different forms: graphite, diamond, and fullerenes.

    Graphite is where the carbon forms a hex-grid sheet. It’s turning out that those sheets are very strong for their thickness, when isolated they form graphene which conducts electricity and heat very well, and is 100 times stronger than the same weight of steel.

    Diamond is a three dimensional lattice, and of course holds the record for hardness of a material.

    The fullerenes are basically 2 dimensional grids, bent into cylinders and spheres. The smallest fullerene, with 60 carbon atoms, has the same structure as the seams on a soccer ball, a “truncated icosahedron.”

          When first married, my dear heart used to say that since I was so petite any jewelry should also be “petite”….I soon informed him I would really like to go on the “gaudy “ side when it came to diamonds .
          (Ha!…and he thought he could get away with such a ridiculous line!)

      1. It’s not so much the four bonding sites as the fact that carbon, unlike silicon (for example) which also has four sites…can make chains and rings of itself. Silicon will only form chains with alternating oxygen atoms.

        1. I know this is the common accepted knowledge (these two ideas – tetravalency and self-enchaining). But it pushes another question. Why is alternation prohibitive? Or is it just non-competitive with carbon under MOST conditions of life, like those we know?

          Let’s say that two requirements of a life-supporting biochemical system are ACTUALLY fundamentals such as:

          ABILITY TO FORM LINEAR POLYMERS (to create messages)

          and

          ABILITY TO BRANCH FROM MONOMERS (to create an alphabet)

          and

          WORKING ENERGY ECONOMY (whatever the system)

          Why is diatomic alternation of a “sweet pair” like silicon and oxygen not an allowable solution for the backbone, given some proper milieu of monomers and their supporting chemistry? Thus, perhaps in some more reductive and silicon-rich environment where carbon compounds become less competitive or non-competitive but siloxanes are STILL competitive, we could see THAT alternative prosper.

            I just have no idea what it is.

            (One thing I’ll toss out there as pure speculation is that perhaps it would work…but at a higher temperature range.)

    6. My son had an carbon bike he bought custom made for him from Italy about 20 years ago. My son is 6/4 and the bike was perfect for him. The bike was assembled in the US and costed at the time over $10,000.

      Sunday we drove to Columbus spend a day and night there. We left about 5 PM to drive home and the temperature was dropping and it rained at first than sleet.
      The closer we got to home the less rain and temperature went up to 46F
      Woke up this morning 1″ snow and temperature dropped into the twenties.
      My son from Ann Arbor MI called me they were supposed to get 1-3″ of snow and they got 10″.
      Daughn I am surprised that it is so called in the South where you live.
      We normally do not see temperature in the twenties until mid December and snow until January.
      Not complaining I like the seasons and snow.

        2. Seems to me that if you are worried about the Q Tree and its populace then they are owning a whole lot of real estate in your head.

          Back in the day, the University of Miami was known simply as “The U”. They were known to be mean. lean and faster than lightning. One time they got off a plane in battle fatigues. The lily-livered NCAA elite were all upset – thugs they called them. Of course they also kicked everybody’s ass. “It ain’t braggin’ if you can back it up.”

          I refer to this blog as “The U” because that’s how I view our joint adventure here. We are unbridled from and uninhibited by convention and pretence. We respect and acknowledge opposing views and we engage with honesty. But we are “The U” – lean, mean and way out ahead. We may engage and perhaps even squabble among ourselves – but to all others we are The U – Unite, Unbridled, Undeterred – just NEVER Unkempt.

    Who’s Boss?

    When the Lord made Man, all the parts of the body argued over who would be Boss.

    The Brain explained that since he controlled all the parts of the body, he should be Boss.

    The Legs argued that since they took the Man wherever he wanted to go, he should be Boss.

    The Stomach countered with the explanation that since he digested all the food, he should be Boss.

    The Eyes said that without them, Man would be helpless, so they should be Boss.

    Then the Ass Hole applied for the Job. The other parts of the body laughed so hard that the Ass Hole became mad and closed up.

    After a few days, the Brain went foggy, the Legs got wobbly, the Stomach got ill, the Eyes got crossed and unable to see.

    They all conceded and made the Ass Hole Boss.

    This proves you don’t have to be a Brain to be Boss……just an Ass Hole.

    A few days after Christmas, a mother was working in the kitchen and listening to her son playing with his new electric train in the living room. She heard the train stop and her son said, “All of you sons of bitches who want off, get the hell off now cause this is the last stop! And all of you sons of bitches who are getting on, get your asses on the train cause we’re leaving!”

    The mother went in and told her son, “We don’t use that kind of language in this house. Now, I want you to go to your room for two hours. When you come out, you may play with your train, but I want you to use nice language.”

    Two hours later, mother was still working in the kitchen. Her son comes out of the bedroom and resumes playing with the train. Soon the train stopped and the mother heard her son say, “All passengers who are disembarking the train, please remember to take all of your belongings with you. We thank you for riding with us today and hope your trip was a pleasant one. We hope you will ride with us again. For those of you boarding, we ask that you stow all of your hand luggage under your seat. Remember, there is no smoking except in the club car. We hope that you will have a pleasant and relaxing journey with us today. For those of you who are pissed off about the two hour delay, please see the bitch in the kitchen.”

    4. This reminds me of an exchange between me and our son who was about 5 at the time. Previous, I had admonished him for using foul language, although I knew he was just repeating something he’d heard, and I applied his tongue to a bar of soap, not a lot, but just enough. Later, we were doing some remodeling on our kennel, and he came in and told me, “Mom, those men are saying soap words”. I just about died! (Well, I managed to keep it in and told my hubby later!)

            2. The TV programming was dubious by the mid-90s. I actually LOCKED THE CHANNEL, because the programming was attractive to kids, but very:

              – anti-Christian
              – anti-listen-to-parents
              – cultural Marxist memes
              – pro-Goth-emo-leather-punk-weird
              -anti-traditional
              -promoted role models of adult “friends” of kids OVER their “misunderstanding” parents

              All it took was one Disney channel daytime drama and the ads for more to make me cut it off completely. LOCKED OUT.

        3. I miss Johnny! I have a 7-tape set of his show and pull it out now and then when I am feeling nostalgic. He could crack you up with a look! He and his estate has given literally millions to Norfolk and the University of Nebraska. His sister’s son now handles his estate.

      2. The voting system is corrupted not only in Kentucky and Florida but especially in California. There are as many good people there as anywhere else but they have no voice. Their leadership is in so deep that they’ll watch it go down rather than pay with their lives to have it fixed.

  42. Well, I just held my nose and skulked over to Marica’s Combination Prayer and Sex Blog once again and I was glad to see PHC is still alive and kicking. He sure has been in hospice a long time, well over 6 months.

    Anyway, it’s the same old dirty old woman’s fantasy palace, complete with see-through lingerie photos and rampant sex talk.

    I always wonder how they type so well with only one hand.

    2. That’s the problem with living in the Plains States, basically the middle of our country. There are no mountain ranges to stop the bitter cold winds from blowing down from Canada. As a kid with a morning paper route in Oklahoma, I was only too well familiar with those blasts of cold weather. That cold wind would bite right through any outer wear available back then.
