  1. So, in doing the reading for a comment on this thread, we have a new concept — hot and cold fusions. “Cold fusions” (pioneered way back in 1974 by the Dubnans) are where you take some innocuous sort of medium-heavy element, such as bismuth, and smoosh fairly weighty ions such as zinc into them. The Darmstadt Group attempted to do this to make Nh in 1998 and 2003, with little success. “Hot fusions” are where you take something already pretty far up the periodic table and smoosh it with lighter bits, like smooshing calcium into plutonium.

In 2005, the Dubnans and the Berkeley crew managed to identify Nh as a decay product of Mc….without having synthesized an Nh.

In the meantime, a new entrant swooped in and yelled from the top of a sand dune: “Dubnans, you magnificent bastards, I read your papers!” and synthesized an atom of Nh at the Riken Center in Japan using the discredited cold fusion method in July 2004. Which is why, way up here at element 113, we have the equivalent of “Japanium”.

  2. It should be noted that, “when the discovery of a new element is claimed, the Joint Working Party (JWP) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) assembles to examine the claims according to their criteria for the discovery of a new element, and decides scientific priority and naming rights for the elements. For the JWP, priority in confirmation takes precedence over the date of the original claim.”

  3. Recent reports indicate the Japanese banking crisis shows no signs of improving. If anything, it’s getting worse. Following last week’s news that Origami Bank had folded, it was today learned that Sumo Bank has gone belly up. Bonsai Bank plans to cut back some of its branches. Karaoke Bank is up for sale and is going for a song.

Meanwhile, shares in Kamikaze Bank have nose-dived and 500 jobs at Karate Bank will be chopped. Analysts report that there is something fishy going on at Sushi Bank and staff there fear they may get a raw deal.

  4. A guy goes to the city office to pay his taxes.

    “Next please! Your name?”

    “M-m-m-m-m-m-m-michael S-s-s-s-s-s-s-smith.”

“Alright buddy, try to calm down.”

“I’m fine, but my dad was a bit nervous when he went to register my birth.”

  5. Once upon a time a powerful Emperor of the Rising Sun advertised for a new Chief Samurai. After a year, only three applied for the job: a Japanese, a Chinese and a Jewish samurai.

“Demonstrate your skills!” commanded the Emperor.

The Japanese samurai stepped forward, opened a tiny box and released a fly. He drew his katana and swish, the fly fell to the floor, neatly divided in two. “What a feat!” said the Emperor.

“Samurai Number Two, show me what you do.” The Chinese samurai bowed, stepped forward and opened a tiny box, releasing a fly. He drew his katana and swish, swish, the fly fell to the floor neatly quartered. “That is skill!” nodded the Emperor.

“How are you going to top that, Samurai Number Three?” The Jewish samurai stepped forward, opened a tiny box, releasing one fly, drew his katana and swoooooosh, flourished his katana so mightily that a gust of wind blew through the room. But the fly was still buzzing around!

In disappointment, the Emperor said, “What kind of skill is that? The fly isn’t even dead.”

“Dead, schmead,” replied the Jewish samurai. “Dead is easy. Circumcision . . . that takes skill!”

  6. This has nothing to do with this post, but youtube just served me up some “Green Onions” from 1967 with an incredibly young Steve Cropper and Donald “Duck” Dunn. Compare with their later appearance in The Blues Brothers.
